World War II (Japanese Occupation)
During World War II the French were overthrown by the Japanese, which led the United States and the Viet-MInh to form an alliance and overthrow the Japanese occupation. As a result, Ho Chi Minh and his nationalists sought this as an opportunity to expand their movement. The following documents will assist both teachers and student to understand the continuing struggle of the Vietnamese people and their strife for independence whilst under the Japanese occupation.
Teaching Strategy 1
This topic can be taught in a very engaging way as it is one that is highly debated till today. Teachers can set this unit of work in the form of a research task and students can debate for and against it. An ideal topic of debate can be titled "Japanese occupation was a positive influence towards Vietnamese independence". This should take at least 1 lesson on its own.
World War II (Alliance)
As this unit of work is the most dense of all the units, it would be ideal to break it up into further subtopics with a lesson on each subtopic. This section looks at the alliance between the U.S.A and Vietnam in their effort to overthrow the Japanese occupation.
(Brawley, Dixion & Green, 2005,p 25-26).
Teaching Strategy 2
As can be seen, the Alliance was an integral part of the lead up to the formation of the Viet Minh, which will be discussed later on in "The Story" tab. However, in saying so teachers can initiate teaching this topic by either conducting a source analysis activity on the following source or by allowing students to write a creative piece on what they assumed would have happened in the lead up to the photo being captured. This should take no more than 1 lesson on its own.
(Sutherland, 1990, p.20).
World War II (Declaration of Independence)
During this era in time Ho Chi Minh sought this period as the most suitable to fight for Vietnam's independence especially with the aid of the United States. His declaration of independence was seen as the pivotal point of Indochina's journey towards self-determination. Below are some resources most suitable for teachers and students.
Cold War
The period of political, economic, and ideological rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union, from around 1945 to 1991. The following resources are essential for both students and teachers to be able to understand the context of the political situation for Indochina during the war.
(Sutherland, 1990, p 23).
Teaching Strategy 3
Below is a website of useful Teaching resources and set lesson plans for teachers to use in order to teach this topic.
http://edsitement.neh.gov/lesson-plan/strategy-containment-1947-1948#section-16288 (Edsitement: The best of the Humanities on the Web, 2015). It is highly recommended that teachers use this site to teach this part of the unit as it elaborates on the Truman Doctrine and The Marshall Plan. Teachers can spend another 2 lessons (2 hours) on this section of the unit.

Teaching Strategy 4
An interactive website for students to better understand the Cold War would be:
http://teachingamericanhistory.org/static/neh/interactives/coldwareuropemap/ (Teaching Amercian History, 2015).
An ideal teaching strategy for students to incorporate within this segment of the topic would be to create a PowerPoint or Prezi on a specific concept of the Cold War, for example: The Truman Doctrine, The Marshall Plan and the containment policy. The following link will take students to the Prezi website if they wish to use it. https://prezi.com/
