Relevance of the Topic
The "Decolonisation of Indochina" topic is relevant in the Modern History syllabus for students to understand the origins of the most influential wars in the later 20th century. This topic will cover the period of 1945 to 1954, when the french were still occupying and controlling the region till the Second World War. Since 1945, Ho Chin Minh and the Vietminh would strive for the independence of Vietnam, as a colony of the French. This struggle lead to the First Indochina War and the Vietminh did claim victory over the French but this was short lived. The topic will also reflect external forces, who saw Vietnam as the vital domino in the Cold War and led to three decades of war in the country.
